About the Sonepur Municipality

Subarnapur town is situated in the confluence of river Mahanadi and Tel. This was an old town and a city of fame from the time of Soumavamsi Ruler, it is also known for its rich culture, heritage, arts and crafts. The textiles, handloom and terracotta works of this town have earned worldwide reputation. Moreover this town is known as Temple town and favour for its old heritage and culture.

Subarnapur Municipality is constituted in 1st April 1951 vide Govt. Notification No.58/LSG dtd. 03.01.1951, and it is bounded river Mahanadi on the north, River Tel on south. River Mahanadi and Tel on east and Haladipali, Chhanchhan Dunguri, Dhobabahali, Baiganjori and Pansiali on the west. The geographical area of the Municipality is 13.67 Sq.Km. with a population of 17540 as per Census 2001. The Municipality has been declared as class II urban local body, vide Urban Development Resolution No 10209/UD dtd.11.08.1988.
